The university library course in Academic Information Literacy is created for you as a student at Karlstad University. Here you will get information on how to search for, evaluate, and manage (scholarly) information, as well as how to write your own academic texts.

The course consists of three modules. After completing each module, you will be able to:

- Select search terms based on a research question
- Structure your search for information
- Search in the right places (find out where to locate different types of material)
- Use basic search techniques to make your search more effective
- Evaluate your search result
Evaluate and Criticize
- View different types of material critically and evaluate your sources
- Identify different types of scholarly material
- Evaluate scholarly information
The Academic Text
- Learn how to structure an academic text
- Avoid plagiarism
- Understand Swedish copyright laws and Creative Commons (CC) licensing
- Write references according to a chosen reference style

The aim of the course is to supply the students at Karlstad University with a basic understanding of information literacy. The Swedish Higher Education Act states that:

Undergraduate courses and programs should develop students':

- ability to make independent and critical assessments,
- ability to identify, formulate, and solve problems independently, as well as their
- ability to handle changes in their working life.

In addition to knowledge and skills in their field of study, students should develop the ability to:

- search for and evaluate information at an academic level,
- follow the development of knowledge in their field, as well as
- communicate their knowledge to others, including those who lack specialist knowledge in the field.
